INITIAL IDEAS/ PROTOTYPE
I decided to make my comic around the idea of being chlostrephobic in the city; amongst people, traffic etc. I used animal characters to press the fact that the city can be a quite animalistic place for a timid person (hence why a mouse is the main character). I tried not to show any sky or openness in the frames to illustrate tight spaces, until the end frame where the mouse is safe at home.
Here I started to add and refine images to construct my comic. I used pen/tablet and photoshop brush to neaten up the lines. This was the most efficient way as I had a lot of images to correct! Then I placed the outline drawings on a lightbox, and used them as a guide to block in colour (indian ink and gouache). Then scanned the individual colour pieces and overlayed them with outlines.
I wanted the text to be simple and uniform, yet maintain the rough aesthetic of the illustrations. I experimented with some free hand lettering, however because the images are quite ‘free’, the text needed to be straight in order to balance everything out. So I hand traced over a simple/clear typeface (Sassoon Regular).
